I’m Training for The North Face ECS GORE-TEX® 50 Mile Race!

My answer was a resounding “YES!” when I was asked to run for Team GORE-TEX® again, this time for The North Face Endurance Challenge Series (ECS) DC GORE-TEX® 50 Mile on April 18th.

Course Guide

I ran the Philly Half Marathon this past fall with Team GORE-TEX® and had a blast running the race in my Saucony Ride 7 GTX® shoes and Gore Running Wear®. You can read about it here:

The GORE-TEX® 50 Miler will be my first ultra, but I feel like I’m ready after recently qualifying for Boston at the Tobacco Road Marathon on March 15th. My training log below shows my mileage so far this year and the races are highlighted in red.

Training Log

Lately I’ve been getting in some great trail runs with my new gear provided by the great folks at W. L. Gore.

This time I’m running in a fantastic pair of GORE-TEX® Trail Running Shoes, the Merrell Ascend Glove GORE-TEX®.

Splashing through an icy puddle in my Saucony Ride 7 GTX®’s

While I experienced the miracle of dry feet in snow, slush, and ice all winter long in my Saucony Ride 7 GTX®’s, these days I’m staying dry while running through pouring rain and over muddy trails in the GORE-TEX® Merrells.

So far I have almost 100 miles in the Merrells, including the 16-miler and a 22-miler this past Sunday. I’ve run through lots of mud and puddles and my feet have stayed dry. The cool thing is that the shoes are light and flexible and I don’t notice anything different compared to a non-GORE-TEX® shoe. The weight of the GORE-TEX® is minimal and the Merrell Ascend Glove GORE-TEX® lives up to its name by providing a glove-like fit.  It’s pretty cool to have a barefoot-style shoe that also has the protection of GORE-TEX®.

Gore RunniMe in front yardng Wear® has been a perfect complement to my new GORE-TEX® shoes. In the picture on the left, I’m wearing the Magnitude WINDSTOPPER® Active Shell Jacket , the X-Running 2.0 Shorts, and a Gore Running Wear® Running Cap. The jacket is light and breathable and perfect for a cool spring day. It has a ventilated back panel that provides great air flow.

The X-Running 2.0 Shorts are full of storage options; there’s a back zipper pocket that fits an iPhone perfectly, loops that can carry 8 energy gel packs, and mesh pockets on the legs of the integral compression shorts that can fit additional fuel, keys, cash, a credit card, or anything else.

I’m planning to wear the X-Running 2.0 Shorts and the Merrell Ascend Glove GORE-TEX® Trail Shoes for the ECSDC GORE-TEX® 50 Mile. I’ll be posting and tweeting about my training and gear as the race approaches. Stay tuned for my interview with Kirk Christensen, GORE-TEX® Running Footwear’s Global Leader, in an upcoming post.

Wish me luck and I welcome any advice on running my first ultra!
